Principal's Message

Anthony Families,

We are hopefully past the cold weather of Winter and have now moved into 4th Quarter. Recently, we enjoyed our Jump Rope for Heart assembly and program as well as a special Bagpipe performance from visiting British soldiers.  Further, we have successfully completed our music concerts at Leavenworth High School.  If you have any feedback from this change to have our concerts at LHS, please let us know.  Lastly, our Read Across America event was a resounding success.  To cap off this week celebrating reading, over 20 guest readers came to Anthony to read to classes in the building.  We were fortunate to have a number of retired teachers and community members as well as local business people read to our students at this event.  Some of our featured readers included:

Capt. Foust (US Army)
Todd Thompson (County Attorney)
Loyal Torkelson (USD 453 BOE Member)
Sarah Bodensteiner (Lansing City Clerk)
Jermaine Wilson (Unity in the Community)
Melissa Bower (City of Leavenworth Public Information)
Jeff Pittman (State Representative)
Christy Lentz (USD 453 Director of Teaching and Learning)
Pat Kitchens (Leavenworth Police Chief)
Mike Roth (USD 453 Superintendent)
Paul Kramer (Leavenworth City Manager)

During this month and into fourth quarter, I do want to remind you of some upcoming events. Beginning on March 28, we will start state assessments for Grades 3-5. Your child’s teacher will be in touch regarding details of these assessments. As always, attendance is critical on these testing days as well as getting a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast on testing days. Also, I wanted to encourage any Anthony community member to attend our PTO/Site Council meetings. These are held monthly with our April meeting being on Thursday, April 20 at 4:30 pm at Anthony. If you are not able to attend but are interested in being a part of PTO/Site Council, please email me at bodensteiner@lvpioneers.org or call us at (913) 684-1500. Finally, we will hold our annual Kindergarten Round Up for families who have students that will enter Kindergarten next year (2017-2018 school year) on Tuesday, April 18 at 5:30 pm.

Thank you so much to all our guest readers and the fantastic community support we have had this month and moving forward at Anthony Elementary.

Principal, Anthony Elementary School

Anthony Staff Members Show What it Means to be a Team

The third grade team at Anthony Elementary recently demonstrated teamwork at its finest. One of the team members, Kristy Sloan, faced medical issues that took her out of the classroom for a month. Ms. Sloan says her amazing third grade teammates, Lora Crawford and Cara Lake, picked up on her behalf in a big way. They helped with her lessons plans and assisted her substitute so that Sloan could take care of herself without worrying about her class. As a thank you for all Crawford and Lake did, Sloan purchased matching Toms shoes for the team.

Second Graders Learn About Habitats

Second graders at Anthony Elementary have been learning about different habitats. Recently they built dioramas to represent the different habitats they learned about, including the arctic, deserts, oceans, and others. This week they showed off their creations for parents and peers and explained things they learned about the habitat they built.

Anthony Students Hold Friendly Competition in Advance of State Testing

Anthony third, fourth, and fifth graders held a friendly competition this week to raise excitement about the impending State Tests. The event included scooter races, tissue toss, and a hula hoop pass. During each event one class from each grade competed to win points for their grade level. The fifth graders were the winners of the overall competition and earned and extra recess. Students also had a special motivational speech and rap performance from Jermain "Too Short" Wilson who told students if they do their best they can be anything they want in life. The afternoon concluded with a student vs. staff volleyball game. Students came up just short of a victory over their teachers.

Kindergarten Rocking Roundup

Parents and students will have the opportunity to meet kindergarten teachers and building administrators. Tour the school, learn about kindergarten readiness expectations, and complete pre-enrollment paperwork.
